Charles H. Wright Sr. Charles H. ‘Pops’ Wright Sr., 75, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018 in Amarillo. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at First Baptist Church in Olney, with Rev. Steve Ulrey officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodson Cemetery in Woodson. Arrangements are under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home of Olney. Charles was born Nov. 10, 1942 in Paducah, Cottle County, to the late Buford Earl Wright Sr. and Margaret Elinor (Ervin) Wright. He married Evelyn Ann Turner Dec. 22, 1962 in Rochester. He started his law enforcement career Oct. 1, 1964 as a deputy in Quanah. He served in Seymour, Baylor County from 1965 to 1966. He served in Snyder from 1967 to 1968 and also drove an ambulance with Odis Glasscock with the Snyder Ambulance Service. He served with the Midland Sheriff’s Department from 1968 to 1970 and as a Brownfield deputy from 1970 to 1973. Charles was chief of police in Seagraves from 1973 to 1975 and then served as sheriff of the Hemphill County Sheriff’s Department in Canadian from 1975 to 1984. He left law enforcement in 1985 to become the manager for his daughter’s show, Sheila Helton Country Music Show. Charles was also the owner of Marly D. Hotshot and Hauling and Wright’s Answering Service from 1981 to 1985. He moved to Olney and worked for the Olney Police Department from 2011 to 2017, and then worked for the Young County Sheriff’s Office as jailer and transport officer from 2017 until present. Charles was a member of the Texas Sheriff’s Association, the Blue Knight Riders Club and the Patriot Guard. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America and served as leader and district leader in both Seagraves and Canadian. He was affectionately known as “Pawpaw” to his grandkids and great-grandkids, and thoroughly enjoyed their ballgames, rodeos and fun times with family. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ann Wright on Aug. 22, 2006; one sister; one brother and one great-grandson. Survivors include two daughters, Sheila Steward and husband, Ray, of McLean and Lorraine England and husband, Curtis, of Iowa Park; two sons, Charles H. Wright Jr. of Olney and John Helton and wife, Melissa, of Mobeetie; one brother, Ronald Wright Sr. of Seymour; one sister, Marilyn McGough of Seymour; three sisters-in-law, Linda Wright of Archer City, Maxine Ingle and husband, Tommy, of Beeville and Frankie Franklin and husband, Ted, of Slaton; three brothers-in-law, Buddy Lee of Abilene, Sam (Jr.) Turner and wife, Shirlan, of Granbury and Kenny Turner and wife, Judy, of Nashville, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren, Marlana, Charly and Calvin Helton, Candice and Chandra Wright, Chasidy McCullough, Caleb and Cayleigh England, Christine Hyatt, Connie and Joey Day, Christy Blaylock, Clint and Amber Steward, Nikki and Mario Perez, Mitch and Melanie Steward; 27 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
