John Lee Holcombe, 78, peacefully passed away Friday, Aug. 4, 2017, in Wichita Falls. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, at the First United Methodist Church in Olney, with Rev. Harrell Braddock Jr., pastor, officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home of Olney. John Lee was born May 21, 1939 in Weinert, to the late Luther Dell Holcombe and Minnie Mae (Furrh) Holcombe. He graduated from Mattson High School in 1957 and then attended the Department of Public Safety Academy in Austin. John Lee served as a trooper with the state of Texas for four years. His joy was his trucking and construction business of over 40 years. He was known for his work ethic and passion for the business. He married Sue Watson on June 17, 1959 at the Paint Creek Methodist Church. They moved to Olney in 1960 from Haskell. John Lee was a member of the Olney Rodeo Association and a lifetime member of the American Quarter Horse Association. He also served as a 4-H board member. He enjoyed showing and raising Quarter horses on his ranch. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Brandon Boyce Holcombe; three brothers, L.D. Holcombe Jr., Marshall Holcombe and Boyce Holcombe; and two sisters, Wanda Johnson and Oma Gayle Barton. John Lee is survived by his wife, Sue Holcombe of Olney; one son, Monty Shea Holcombe and wife Leslie of Bryan-College Station; one sister, Elva Mae Thigpen of Aspermont; two grandchildren, Hayden Holcombe and Hudson Holcombe, both of Bryan-College Station; as well as several nieces and nephews.
