Margaret “Gene” Burnett

Margaret “Gene” Burnett, 94, a proud daughter of Graham, passed away on June 26 at home in Brush, Colo. with her loving son Wes Burnett and her daughter-in-law Barbara by her side. She was born in Jean on June 9, 1925 to the late Ola and Thomas Watson Brazelton. She was predeceased by her husband L.W. “Bernie” Burnett, Jr. the love of her life for 51 years and her sister Mildred Clark.

She graduated from Graham High School and attended Tarleton College where she studied accounting. She and Bernie lived throughout Texas during his career as a corporate pilot. They moved to Lubbock in 1966 and she completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting at Texas Tech in 1979, graduating Suma Cum Laude. She passed the CPA examination 1980 and was a CPA in Lubbock through 2006 while continuing to run the Burnett Ranch in South Bend.

She was a faithful member of Saint Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Lubbock and was active in the Lubbock County Friends of the Library.

Gene met every challenge in her life with optimism and courage. She was adored by her family for her smile, her compassion, her sparkling personality, her razor sharp intellect, her witty haiku poems and her fierce loyalty to all things Texas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her honor to the South Plains Food Bank in Lubbock.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 29, at McMillan-Satterwhite Funeral Home. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
