Michael was born on Dec. 30, 1946 in Merced, California to Bettye Mae Elkins and Charles McClain Coughlan. On Dec. 14, 1985, he married his high school sweetheart, Maggie Warren of Sonoma Ca. Together, the two created a beautiful family with seven wonderful children. He loved his family dearly and far surpassed any expectations one might hold for a man to be a loving husband and father.

Michael also surpassed the expectations of the United States Marine Corp., where he became a highly decorated soldier during the Vietnam war. The average number of campaigns completed during Vietnam, was two, Michael completed 11 of 17 campaigns. He had earned the following medals and badges; *National Defense Service Medal*Vietnam Service Medal*Vietnam Campaign Medal with two silver stars*United States Marine, Good Conduct Medal*Combat action badge*The Presidential Unit Citation and the Expert marksman badge
Michael played the 12-string guitar beautifully and it was a very special part of who he was. He would play in small gatherings when all the family were together. A time they all enjoyed. What made him stand apart from most was how no matter what he had going on, he always greeted you with a smile.

He chose to live a life of humor and smiles. He was a silly man who found joy in making people laugh. Through laughter, he found his calling. Through his wife and children, he found love and through music he found his peace. Through Michael, you learned what it meant truly meant to be a good and decent human being.

Michael will be greatly missed, his memory cherished by all and forever in the hearts of those he loved.
