Rex Lee Mathis

Rex Lee Mathis was born June 24, 1940, in Jack County, to Floyd Lee and Juanita Evadine (Bottoms) Mathis. He passed away Sunday, Feb. 19, 2017 in Abilene. He was 76 years old. Rex married Joan Dunlap on Nov.28, 1957 in Jermyn. He was a retired oilfield supervisor, having worked many years for R.L. Adkins Corporation. He was a active member and deacon for First Baptist Church in Jacksboro as well as serving on the Faith Community Hospital Board. Rex was a member and past Master of Fort Richardson #320 Masonic Lodge. He served his community, faithfully followed his Lord and savior; and was a loving and kind husband, father, brother and friend, who will be missed dearly. He is preceded in death by his parents. Among those who will cherish his memory are his wife, Joan Mathis of Abilene; children, Tina Wyatt and husband Jay, Lee Mathis and wife Kelly, and Wanda Gregory and husband Tommy, all of Abilene; brother, Donald Mathis of Jacksboro; grandchildren, Mitchell Wyatt, Jason Gregory, Chelsie Harruff, Jennifer Lovelady, Amy Simmons and Kristen Newton; nephew, Timmy Mathis; nieces, Shelly Swan and Teresa Austin; seven great-grandchildren with one on the way come April; and many other extended family members and friends. Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 23 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Coker Funeral Home in Jacksboro.
