William L. Lyles, 95, left this world peacefully to be with Jesus the morning of March 30, 2022. He was born to the late Robert L Lyles, a carpenter, and Annie Irene Lyles, a homemaker, in Young County, Texas, on Oct. 7, of 1926. He worked with his father in a carpentry business then proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean conflict and later received a degree from Texas A&M University. He spent most of his life working with the Soil and Water Conservation Districts of Texas and continued to work with them well into his eighties. Willie was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Mason and enjoyed serving as an usher there for many years.

William humbly and quietly accepted where God and life had him during the last several years of his life and he kept a very positive outlook in spite of the pains that come with old age. If you asked him how he was doing, he would always answer with something like “great”, “couldn’t be better” or something similar, even if he was in the hospital after one of his falls.

One of his greatest sources of joy came from his grandchildren and great grandchildren and he cherished news about them and speaking with them. He was often moved to tears of joy when seeing the grandchildren which he loved more than words can describe.

He was preceded in death by a brother Tom A Lyles and sister, Jessie Ruth Lyles Williams, and a son, Cary Grote Lyles.

He is survived by his daughter Elizabeth (Libby) Lyles Kissko and her husband Mick Kissko of Wall, TX, and grandchildren Lesli and Luke Uherik and their daughters Charli and Lissi; Johnny and Brenda Kissko and their son Mason, Lindsay and Russell Carr and their children Maddox, Preston, Caroline, and Kennedy; and Katy Kissko and her daughter Jaynee.

He is also survived by his former wife Shirley Beth Grote Lyles of Mason TX, son Neel Lyles of Mason, and grandchildren Ben Lyles and Bridget Lyles Fry and her children Payne and Piers.

William is also survived by his sister, Annie Gary of Fort Worth, TX, sister-in-law Lea Lyles of Azle, Texas, and brother-in-law Jim Williams, also of Azle. Surviving him are also several nieces, nephews, cousins and their families, and a host of other friends.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Candy Karim who was a wonderful caregiver and friend, and also acknowledge the Mason County Senior Nutrition Program and ask that memorials in Willie’s honor be made to The Senior Nutrition Program or First United Methodist Church or a favorite charity.
