What do you say when you talk to yourself?

You have just completed a major work project before the deadline. Having worked diligently and spending your own time, you’re proud of the results and can’t wait to impress your boss. You show him the project and he immediately begins to criticize it and you. The criticism is completely unwarranted. What do you say to yourself? “I’ve failed again” or “He must be having a bad day, I know I did an excellent job”?

This Week in Texas History: Dallas doctor falls for “It Girl”

Clara Bow, the scandalous star of the silent screen, slipped into Dallas under the cover of darkness on Jul. 21, 1930 in search of an ex-lover and $30,000 in hush money.

The femme fatale of silent films entered a Los Angeles hospital for an appendectomy in February 1928. On the day of her discharge, Clara’s constant companion Tui Lorraine walked in on the famous patient and a handsome intern “locked in a passionate embrace.” The embarrassed doctor turned beet red and ran out of the room.

“I think he’s gorgeous,” Clara giggled.

Ask Rusty – I’m turning 70. When should I apply for Social Security?

Dear Rusty: I have a very simple question: I will turn 70 on September 20th and want to start my Social Security benefits in September. What month should I file my claim? Have there been delays with the reductions in SSA staff? Thank you for your help. Signed: Ready to Claim.

Dear Ready to Claim: Social Security allows you to submit your application for benefits up to 4 months prior to the month you wish benefits to start (you will specify your desired benefit-start-month on the application).

This Week in Texas History: 'Fastest human' broke records and all the rules

Marine Capt. Charles William Paddock, the first native Texan to win Olympic gold and the fastest thing on two feet during the Roaring Twenties, perished in an Alaska plane crash on Jul. 21, 1943.

Born in the summer of 1900 in Gainesville, Charley Paddock was a sickly child who at seven months weighed a scant seven and a half pounds.

His father, a big wheel on the railroad, moved the family to Pasadena, California in 1907 on the hunch that a change of climate would improve his fragile son’s health.

Ask Rusty – What is the formula for deciding when to claim?

Dear Rusty: I am curious about the “formula” to decide when to take Social Security while still working. I am past the Full Retirement Age. How do you best address such? Should we schedule a call? Signed: Wondering When

Dear Wondering: Well, you can always contact us by phone on 1-888-750-2622 to speak to one of our certified Social Security Advisors, or you can send your questions to us via email at SSadvisor@amacfoundation.org.

Fail your way to success

Fear of failure is one of the biggest fears people have. Ironically, failure is an integral component of the success process.

There are two distinctly different types of failure. Absolute failure is when you give up. Successful failure is when you get back up.

Of course, not everything you attempt works out as planned. When striving for a goal, you will likely discover many ways which don’t work as anticipated. Successful people throughout history have experienced this phenomenon.

This Week in Texas History: “Lady Bountiful” saint, sinner or both?

Lillian Knox, once the prime suspect in the staged suicide of her timber tycoon husband, was back in the news on July 15, 1939 following her arrest in Los Angeles on warrants out of Dallas and Shreveport.

The Big D district attorney announced that the infamous “Lady Bountiful,” the nickname bestowed upon Knox by East Texas admirers, would be extradited back to Texas to face seven counts of check forgery.

The postal inspector in Shreveport quickly added that the unlikely fugitive had a date in federal court on charges of mail fraud.

Ask Rusty – Why can’t I get my Social Security payment plus my railroad pension from my ex-spouse?

Dear Rusty: I have a question. I now get a Railroad Pension from my ex-husband. I did not know it was from the Social Security Administration. I want to collect my SS benefits and my Railroad pension. Can I do that? I do not understand why I cannot collect both. Please advise. Thank you. Signed: Railroad Ex-spouse

It all starts with a dream

Dreams precede everything; all actions and all creations. Truly, everything does start with a dream. Dreaming is not an idle activity. It’s not an escape from reality. Dreams are the foundation of all creativity.

The type of dreaming I’m talking about doesn’t just occur while you are sleeping. The thoughts occupy your mind constantly, while you are awake as well as resting. These types of dreams stick in your mind. They become a mental obsession. When your mind is focused on a specific detailed dream, it will lead you toward a path that will transform your dream to reality.
