In some places, the summer season might be a time for high school athletics to take a step back for a more leisurely and relaxed approach, but not in Graham.
On top of summer camps, several teams in Graham ISD’s athletic programs are hosting summer leagues in order to build chemistry with teammates and give players valuable experience.
One of the most prominent of these summer leagues are the Steers and Lady Blues softball and baseball leagues.
This year the softball league is being hosted by Lady Blues head coach Adam Arrington at Graham High School’s athletic fields.
Arrington originally put out a post announcing the softball league Monday, April 28.
“If you have a team or know anyone that’s interested in playing in one of our tournaments please let me know asap,” Arrington said. “These are friendly tournaments to get kids innings and continue helping develop their game.”
Currently, there are two lists of dates set for the tournament games. June 7-8 will be for high school tournament games, meaning players are made up of the same high school excluding travel teams.
Then on June 14-15, there will be 14u tournament games where teams can be made up of local players and travel teams.
Arrington had three teams registered for Graham Clyde and Olney for the June 7-8 dates.
He also had four teams registered for the June 14-15 dates in Graham, Bryson, Texas Crush-Southerland and Relentless Paradise.
Since then, Arrington has gotten closer to reaching the goal of six teams per tournament, however the league is still shy of some teams.
Clyde dropped out of the June 7-8 tournament but Arrington was able to pick up Anson and Jacksboro bringing that bracket just two teams shy of its six team goal.
For the June 14-15 dates, there are still the same four teams registered. In total there are still four open slots for teams to register.
“It’s been kind of a slow start to this summer break,” Arrington said. “The Graham softball Lady Blues are in the process of putting two teams together to play some games in June, but are having a hard time having outside teams commit to playing in a small league.”
