The Graham community is officially starting the transition into their winter sports schedule which means a new face for Athlete of the Week.
This week, The Graham Leader is recognizing Ava Street of the Lady Blues and Jordan Alexander of the Steers for this week’s Athletes of the Week.
Ava Street, Lady Blues Basketball
The Lady Blues basketball team got things started off on a high note, beginning their regular season with a victory in front of the hometown crowd against the Haskell Lady Indians.
What’s even more impressive is how much growth the team showed in this competition. Head coach Baylee Thompson said she was impressed with the team’s effort after scoring 61 points against the Lady Indians.
One of those primary scorers was Street. She brought the offensive firepower throughout the night with some big, momentum-shifting plays.
Some of these included a layup in the second quarter to retake the lead for the Lady Blues 12-11, and a three pointer later in that quarter to extend the lead to 15-11, as well as a big three pointer in the fourth quarter to help the Lady Blues stay in control despite a few rallies in the second half from Haskell.
On the night Street finished with 10 points along with a pair of rebounds, an assist and two steals.
The Lady Blues will look to build on successful performances like Street’s as they advance into the season.

Jordan Alexander, Steers Football
The Graham Steers wrapped up their final game of the regular season Friday, Nov. 7, against the Eagle Mountain Knights.
This was a low scoring game with the Steers fighting to pull out a narrow victory by just two points 20-18.
While it took the offense a while to get going, the defense really put the team on its back to keep the score close and put the offense in good positions to capitalize.
One of the catalysts of the defensive effort in that contest was Alexander. The veteran defensive back made a statement play right in the first quarter to set the tone for the Steers.
Alexander intercepted a pass down the right sideline and ran it all the way back for a pick six to give Graham the early 7-0 lead.
In a game which was determined by one score, that one proved to be pivotal for the Steers’ victory.
Veteran leaders like Alexander are a big reason why the Steers advanced into the postseason with a strong second place finish in the district.
