The Newcastle Bobcats opened their season this past week with a tournament in Whiteface.
The Bobcats finished the three-day tournament with a 2-2 record. The tournament took place Thursday, Dec. 4 to Saturday, Dec. 6 and the Bobcats took on teams Sudan, Shallowater’s junior varsity team, Whiteface and New Deal.
The Bobcats opened the tournament with two consecutive wins. The first win came over the Sudan Hornets, 42-36.
However, the most exciting win for the Bobcats came over the Shallowater Mustangs in a back and forth battle, 57-54.
The Bobcats started in front after the first quarter with a 14-9 lead. Keyton Newland and Mikey Soito both hit three midrange jumpshots and Rylan Hinojosa added to the scoring total with a two point shot of his own.
The Bobcats maintained their lead going into the half leading 30-19.
Newland added a two point shot and a free throw while Hinojosa led the team in scoring in the quarter with several midrange jumpshots and a three pointer from beyond the arc.
Jayden Hemby, Soito and Cooper Clayton each added a two point shot of their own to round out the scoring total.
Both Newcastle and Shallowater scored 13 points in the third quarter to make the game 43-32 Bobcats going into the final quarter of play.
Mikey Soito and Jacob Omundi both scored four points in the third quarter with a pair of midrange makes each. Newland added a two point shot and Hinojosa hit a three pointer as well.
In the final quarter, Shallowater made a strong push, but the Bobcats stayed composed to pick up the victory. Newland hit four free throws at the charity stripe and Hinojosa hit a three pointer. Omundi hit a two point shot and a free throw while Soito and Hemby both rounded out the score sheet with two point jumpshots.
The Bobcats continued to fight in their final two games of the tournament but lost to the Whiteface Antelopes 38-28 and the New Deal Lions 77-49.
After a game Tuesday, Dec. 9 the Bobcats will pick up with a tournament in Lingleville from Thursday, Dec. 11 to Saturday, Dec. 13.
