It could be argued that a trend is starting to emerge at Newcastle High School. When former coach Julian Menchaca took charge of the Bobcats football team as head coach, the Bobcats went 7-4 and won a district championship in 2018. On Friday, Nov. 4 at Forestburg High School, under first-year coach Isiah Archer, the Bobcats capped the regular season with a 50-0 win over the Longhorns and a District 8-1A Division II championship.

The Bobcats improved to 7-3 and completed the district schedule with a 3-0 record.

The Longhorns entered the game with a 2-6 record and looking to avoid going winless in the district for the second time in three years. Those hopes were quickly dashed by an 18-yard touchdown by Issac King, one of the key contributors to the Bobcats’ success this season.

By shutting out the Longhorns, the Bobcats marked their third game this season without giving up points. When the Bobcats hosted Woodson on Friday, Sept. 2, the Bobcats defense surrendered no points in a 49-0 win. Their second shutout of the season was more recent, shutting out the Gold-burg Bears at home on Friday, Oct. 28. The Bears scored a combined 134 points in wins over Forestburg and Strawn.

Never in contention to score, the Longhorns were held to two first downs. Meanwhile, the Bobcats scored on six of nine offensive drives. Following King’s run on their first drive of the game, King threw a 14-yard pass to Ty Strawbridge. Successful extra-point kicks gave the Bobcats a 16-0 lead after the first quarter.
