Bryson Cowgirls take down rival Newcastle Ladycats

The Bryson Lady Cowgirls took first in their respective pool to open the Bryson Small School Shootout on Thursday.

After defeating De Leon and rival Newcastle, in an intense back-and-forth, three-set match, head coach Chelsea Kincaid’s team began bracket play as the No. 1 seed in Pool 1.

In a standing room only game against the Ladycats, Sydney Davidson proved to play a pivotal part in the team’s win over its archenemy.

Davidson nearly registered a triple-double by finishing with 17 digs, 14 kills and 8 blocks at the net.

The early season non-district match between the two schools was due to both Bryson and Newcastle being in two separate districts, only for volleyball, after realignment was issued in February.

After Bryson took the opening set 25-23, it appeared the Lady Cowgirls were well on their way to seeping past Newcastle, but the Ladycats had other ideas.

Bryson led 20-15 in the second set behind aces by Davidson and Kyla Jones. Newcastle clawed its way back by finishing the set on a 10-8 run and winning 25-23.

Kelsey Shields had two kills during the streak while Arryn Eli and Nicole Martinez provided a kills each.

The Ladycats took a 1-0 lead in the decisive set on an Eli ace, but Bryson won the set by finishing on a 13-7 run.

Although her team fell, Newcastle head coach Paige Hauger liked what she saw from her squad against a team that advanced to the regional tournament just last year.

“I knew they would be great competition after watching them at regionals last year,” Hauger said. “I couldn’t.....
