It was another successful week for Graham and Newcastle athletics.

The Graham Leader recognizes Madison Cauble of the Lady Blues and Keegen Voyles of the Bobcats as this week's athletes of the week.

Madison Cauble, Lady Blues Volleyball

Cauble is one of seven seniors leading the way for the volleyball team this season. Cauble has served primarily in the front row this season, but has also been able to move to multiple positions this year. This is something that head coach Marci Faulk praised Cauble for over the course of this year.

“She changed positions for us this year,” Faulk said. “She was an outside (hitter) for us last year and this year she went to right side (hitter). Her having that versatility has helped. When Tara (Dawson) went down she went back outside. In serve receive Madison’s not scared to go through the middle and swing against those big blockers, she’ll go and swing all three of her rotations across the front. I like that confidence in her.”

The Lady Blues moved into Bi-District play this week, but not before having a warm-up game against Abilene High Monday, Oct. 27.

After a bit of a funk, the Lady Blues got back on track—picking up a three set sweep over the Lady Eagles by final scores of 25-8, 25-12 and 25-15.

In that game, Cauble showed off her versatility both offensively and defensively by picking up three kills for the team while also adding two blocks to her name.

Keegen Voyles, Bobcats Football

The Newcastle Bobcats didn’t skip a beat in their latest district matchup against the Northside Indians Thursday, Oct. 23.

The Bobcats once again pulled off another dominant victory 46-8 to remain undefeated in district play and advance to 6-2 on the season.

While the offense started to click in recent weeks, especially in the run game, that shouldn’t take away from the impressive efforts of the defense this season as well.

One of the primary performers in that regard against Northside was Voyles. The Newcastle standout had four total tackles on the night, with one being a solo tackle and three assisted tackles.

Voyles also had a key takeaway for the team in this contest with an interception.

The Bobcats move into their final games of district play and will need more standout performances from players like Voyles to continue to remain at the top of the district.
