Graham and Newcastle have officially shifted into the winter sports season now that football season officially comes to an end.

This week, The Graham Leader is recognizing Dylan Cox of the Graham Steers and Emma Hawkins of the Newcastle Ladycats as this week’s Athletes of the Week.

Emma Hawkins, Ladycats Basketball

The Newcastle Ladycats had a slow start to the season but have shown flashes of offensive and defensive brilliance while struggling to get into the win column to start the season.

However, despite the early struggles, head coach Ryan Dollar remains optimistic about the team, believing that they have been putting in a solid effort while going through a transitional phase after losing key seniors from last year's team.

Some veteran leaders on this year’s roster are beginning to step up and one of those leaders is Emma Hawkins.

Despite a loss to the Gorman Lady Panthers in their matchup Tuesday, Dec. 2 by a score of 48-25, Hawkins was a bright spot throughout.

Hawkins scored 11 total points to lead the team by knocking down a three pointer in the first quarter, three midrange jumpers in the second quarter and another midrange shot in the fourth quarter.

Hawkins played a big role in keeping the team competitive throughout the first half.

The team will need more of her multi-level offensive performances as the season advances.

Dylan Cox, Steers Football

Fall football season officially came to an end in Graham after the Steers’ regional semifinal loss to the Midland Greenwood Rangers in their matchup Friday, Nov. 28.

Despite the loss, the Steers fought to the end and there were still standout performers on the day for the team.

One of those main performers offensively was Dylan Cox.

The running back finished the game with 11 carries for 42 yards, second for the team on the night behind Jace Gill in that category.

Cox also ran for two rushing touchdowns in the first half with his second score, giving the Steers a 14-8 lead. However, that would be the final lead the Steers would see in the game.

Cox was only a sophomore this season so he will continue to grow and look to become a veteran leader on this team going into the future.
