Defense wins championships is what the old sports cliché says. If the Lady Blues make a late charge at a district championship, it will be through their defense. It was defense that led the Lady Blues to a 44-27 home win Friday over Mineral Wells.

Points were hard to come by for the Lady Blues in the first half Friday night. After Hannah Seaton opened the game with a 3-pointer to give the Lady Rams the lead, neither time scored another point until the 2:26 mark in the quarter.  Rachel Grimsley ended the Lady Blues scoring drought by taking advantage of a Lady Rams turnover. Moments later, Kate Gober gave the Lady Blues the lead following a second consecutive turnover by the Lady Rams.

With the Lady Blues struggling to make baskets early, coach Ky Graham opted to turn up the pressure on the defensive end.

“We are not a big team,” Lady Blues coach Ky Graham said. “When the shots aren’t falling like tonight, we have to move into a press or pressure from half court to make it more difficult. We have to run our offense through our defense and get some turnovers. I thought that’s what we did against Vernon and that’s what we had to do tonight.”
