Graham High School Track and Field Team throwers junior Hunter Dooley and senior Jack Hays will each compete for a state title after punching their tickets to Austin during last week’s Region 1 Track and Field Meet in Lubbuck. Dooley and Hays were the only two Graham athletes to advance to the UIL State Track and Field Meet, with Dooley taking first in the shot put while Hays took second in the discus. “I think we’re on an eight-year streak of having throwers in,” Graham coach Clay McChristian said. “... We’re trying to keep the streak alive. It seems like we’re becoming the throw high school. Our kids can run well, but it just seems like we know how to throw.” Dooley took first following his 53-feet-3-inch throw, which was an improvement from his 52-4 ½ throw at the area meet but short of his 56 ½ personal record-setting throw at district. Instead of focusing on his next record, Dooley said his focus is consistency and keeping a nonchalant attitude going into the May 12 state meet. “It was not great. It was not a 56, but it was enough to win. I have to keep going and hopefully get the 56 this week (in practice),” Dooley said of his regional performance. “It pushes you for sure and helps you get where you need to get. [State] is just another week and I’m not going to get too hyped up about it. I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing.” For the rest of this story, subscribe to our print or online edition.
