Dyer kicks Steers into state semifinal
All nearly seemed lost with less than a minute left to play and the Graham Steers trailing by one point in the 4A Division II Region I final against the Celina Bobcats. Hunter Lanham, Tre Alveraz and finally Chandler Dyer completed the movie-script ending to send the Steers to the state semifinal.
The drive started with 2:20 remaining on the clock and the Bobcats leading 21-20. After a penalty against the Bobcats on a punt, the Steers found themselves in prime position until the wheels started rattling and appeared to be falling off.
First, Lanham was dropped in the backfield, creating a second and long situation from the Bobcats’ 31-yard-line. Next, the offense was pushed back by a false start penalty, creating a third-and-11. The Steers briefly earned a first down on a screen pass to Daniel Gilbertson before a holding penalty negated the play and created third-and-21. A stuffed play on third down saw the game on the line on fourth-and-24 from the Bobcats’ 44-yard-line causing coach Kenny Davidson to call a timeout for the Steers to decide how they would keep the season alive.
