Football camp focus on fundamentals, fall season

Future Steer football players took over Newton Field this week in preparation for the upcoming season, which starts this month.

Athletes ranging from third through ninth grade learned the basics of the game from the Graham junior high and high school coaches.

While the first day of the camp was wiped out due to lightning Monday morning, the camp still drew a large number. Around 120 campers took part in the drills this week.

The older kids, such as Carson Trice and Codey Henderson, spent the mornings doing specific drills based on the position they will play in the fall.

They competed in oneon-one and team drills which resemble what they will do in the upcoming season.

“For the younger kids, we just try and introduce them to the fundamentals of football,” said Steers head coach Kenny Davidson. “We want them to come here and have a good time by throwing and catching the football and working on their punting and kicking, but we also have a little competition we do at the end of each day where we give away some prizes.” 

“We try to get the kids who are going into middle and high school, ready for the first day of school,” he said. “That way when they show up, they will already be familiar with our offense and defense that we run.”

Knowing the same kids at the camp will eventually be in the high school football....
