Monday marked opening day for UIL softball. The Lady Blues hit the road to open their season at City View. The Lady Mustangs scored four runs in the fourth inning to defeat the Lady Blues 4-3.

Lady Blues coach Adam Arrington said he expects some bumps in the road this season. This year’s Lady Blues features no senior class. Five players on the roster did not play varsity last year. Two more played in nine or fewer games. Only four players from last year’s roster who experienced regular playing time are on this year’s team.

Sophomore Paris Tate led off for the Lady Blues and earned a walk to open the season from Lady Mustangs pitcher Aubery Martinez. After ground-outs by Rainey Ortegon and Meagan Brooks, Tate scored the first run of the season on a line drive to left field by Reese Calhoun. Calhoun was left stranded on second as the top of the first inning ended with a fly-out by Zoey Harrell.

Sophomore pitcher Calhoun had an overall strong showing to start the season. Her first inning pitched of the season began with retiring the side in order, in seven pitches. Calhoun only gave up hits in the fourth inning.
