There was a sense of history Wednesday night at the Graham ISD board of trustees meeting. With approval from the board, Graham officially added soccer to its high school sports program, beginning in spring 2018. Graham Soccer Association vice-president Dawna Gage, along with her husband, Guy, provided a presentation for soccer at the meeting, after having helped propose the idea. Gage said she couldn’t be more thrilled that the motion was approved, because it means opportunities in the future for Graham youth. “We’re just all overwhelmed with emotion and elation over the unanimous vote,” she said. “There was a lot of teamwork between the GSA executive and Graham ISD school boards that also made this possible. Soccer is going to make a big difference in the schools for the kids as well.” “We firmly believe the Graham ISD school board has opened unimaginable opportunities for these kids,” Gage added. “I firmly believe these kids are going to make a smooth transition from youth players into playing competitively at the UIL level.” Graham High School Athletic Director Kenny Davidson echoed the sentiments and said soccer will only mean better things for Graham High School athletics. “A lot of kids around here grow up playing soccer,” he said. “Adding soccer to our program gives them a chance to play the sport they love in high school. Plus, it’s another chance for kids to participate in something when they arrive at the high school level.” For the rest of this story, subscribe to our print or online edition.
