GJHS football splits with McNeil

Fri, 10/14/2022 - 11:10 am

Both seventh-grade football teams lost Tuesday in games against McNeil while both eighth-grade teams earned victories.

The seventh grade B team was shutout 34-0 and the A team followed with an 18-12 loss. The eighth grade B team won 34-6. In the eighth grade A game, the Steers’ defense held McNeil to less than 100 yards of total offense in the shutout victory.

Cooper Corley scored the first of his two touchdowns in the first quarter for the eighth grade A team. Following his 3-yard run, Corley’s pass to Thomason Burkett was successful for a 2-point conversion.

The Steers scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the second quarter. Bryce Martin broke loose for a 52-yard touchdown. Brodie Martin threw to Parker Hale for a successful 2-point conversion. Corley scored on a 17-yard run later in the quarter. Brodie Martin ran in the 2-point conversion for a 24-0 lead at halftime.

Andon Masterfield scored on a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Brodie Martin threw to Toby Boenisch on the successful 2-point conversion.

Defensively, Nico Cervantes had 12 tackles and a blocked punt. Kyson Bates had one interception.

“Our guys really played hard,” eighth grade coach Don Payne said. “Our offense established the running game early and just wore (them) down. We rushed for 208 yards on just 18 carries. The offensive line did a super job. Those guys never get enough recognition. McCrae Reese, Colton Dixon, Joey Livingston, Brayan Monroy and Tyson Louder just get better every week.”

Both seventh grade teams will travel to Sweetwater Tuesday, Oct. 18. The eighth grade teams will host Sweetwater Thursday, Oct. 20 at Newton Field. Both B team teams begin at 5 p.m., followed by the A team games.
