Throughout the season in the Wednesday edition of The Graham Leader, a short compilation of the previous week’s junior high competitions will be included in this roundup. Information is provided by head coaches Kim Brewster of the volleyball team and Spencer Sims of the football team.
Home VB tournament
The GJHS Lady Blues hosted their annual tournament Saturday, Sept. 28 with matches against Iowa Park, Burkburnett and Holliday. Graham’s girls had a great day as the 7AB and 8AB teams all won their pools in the tournament.
The Lady Blues teams each won their tournaments with outright victories and tiebreaker wins, as well. The 8B team won their tournament after winning all three of their games. Players of the game were given to the entire team for their collaboration and communication.
Graham’s 8A team had a 3-way tie with Burkburnett and Holliday. The tiebreaker was based on how many points each team allowed in their games and the Lady Blues came out on top for a tournament win.
The 7B team won their tournament with a 3-set win over Iowa Park and 2-set sweeps of Burkburnett and Holliday. The 7A team swept all three of its opponents, and players of the game were given to the whole team as everyone made contributions in every game.
Burkburnett games
A couple of days after the amazing tournament wins by the GJHS volleyball teams, they headed to Burkburnett for a series of competitions. Graham went 3-1 in four matches against the Lady Bulldogs.
Graham’s 8B team started out with a win 2-0 by scores of 25-7 and 25-22, with players of the game going to Riley Doyle and Teagan Parker.
The 8A team fought hard but lost 2-1 with set scores of 23-25, 25-20 and 15-25. Player of the game honors went to Payce Kinman.
The Lady Blues’ 7B team swept Burkburnett 2-0 by scores of 25-22 and 25-14, with Itali Rivera named player of the game.
Finally, the GJHS 7A team won a 3-set match 2-1 with scores of 16-25, 25-16 and 25-21. Player of the game for the final match went to Eva Caddell.
Football v. Barwise
It was a mixed week of competition for the GJHS football teams against Barwise. The seventh grade teams took losses while the eighth graders won their two match-ups.
Graham’s 7B team took a 26-0 loss against a team that seemed bigger, stronger and faster. But it was a learning experience for Graham’s young team, and defensive MVP went to Kutter Brooks.
The 7A team scored a bit but couldn’t overcome Barwise as they took a 32-12 loss. Kelly Bundrick threw two touchdown passes, one to Sam Burkett and the other to Collier Bennett. Defensive MVP was given to McKinnon Isbell for being a force on the defensive line.
The Steers’ 8B team pulled out a 20-6 win thanks to two touchdowns from Ethan Chandler and one from Bryce Walker. Head coach Spencer Sims said this team is beginning to figure out its strengths, and they’re winning more because of it.
Defensive MVP was given to safety Anthony Herrera who made lots of key tackles throughout the course of the game.
Finally, the 8A team continued its run of domination with another shutout win, a 42-0 crushing of Barwise. Collin Dacus and Daven Green both had rushing touchdowns, and Dacus also threw three touchdown passes to Austin Kilpatrick and Jack Menard.
The 8A team has yet to allow a single point to opposing teams on the season, as they have outscored opponents 152-0 through their first four games. Defensive MVP went to Tucker Webb, who primarily plays offensive line, but he was put in at defensive lineman and had multiple tackles for loss.
