It was another successful week of fall and winter sports for Graham athletics.

This week, The Graham Leader is recognizing Addison Gober of the junior varsity Lady Blues and Mike Garcia of the Steers as Athletes of the Week.

Addison Gober, Lady Blues Junior Varsity Basketball

Both the junior varsity and varsity Lady Blues shined in their games Thursday, Nov. 20 against the Bowie Lady Rabbits.

However, the junior varsity team was simply dominant with a 48-13 blowout victory.

It was a complete effort from the team. Defensively, the Lady Blues were dominant holding the Lady Rabbits to three points for three out of the four quarters. Graham was able to create multiple offensive opportunities off turnovers and many players got in on the scoring.

However, Gober was simply on another level on the night.  She had 24 points, leading the way for the team.

She hit five midrange jumpshots, four three pointers from behind the arc and two free throws at the charity stripe.

Gober has been a primary scorer for the team to start the season.

The Lady Blues will continue to need her leadership as they progress further into the season.

Mike Garcia, Steers Football

The Graham Steers had one of their most impressive wins of the season over the 10-1 Lubbock Cooper Liberty Patriots in their area championship matchup.

The game took place Friday, Nov. 21 and it was a back and forth affair throughout. Both teams traded scores but the Steers eventually pulled away with a 35-28 victory.

The Steers offense was a balanced attack through the air and on the ground and one of the primary contributors in this contest was Garcia.

The senior is in just his first season playing football and made an impact at the area level of playoffs.

Garcia had 11 carries for 39 yards rushing and was key in picking up chunk yards around Lubbock Cooper’s goal line setting up scores.

However, Garcia’s biggest contribution was in the receiving game. Garcia caught three passes for 97 yards and a touchdown.

Garcia’s biggest play of the game was when Jace Gill connected with him on the sideline for an acrobatic 51 yard completion.

The running back was a dynamic playmaker in the Steers’ area championship victory.
