Graham High School will be sending 23 athletes to compete in next weekend’s 4A Region I track meet in Lubbock. This comes after a successful day at the area track meet Wednesday in Mineral Wells. The boys took home a first-place finish. The girls finished third in a decision that was not decided until the final race.

Along with the area championship with the boys team, Graham saw five athletes win area championships in five events. Lillian Graham (800m run), Gage Faulk (110 hurdles), Xavier Reyes (300 hurdles), JJ Lee (discus) and Trent Taylor (pole vault) all won area championships. All top-four finishers advanced to the 4A Region I meet taking place at Plains Capital Park/Lowrey Field in Lubbock April 23-24.

“To win the championship with the boys was awesome. We thought they had a pretty good chance and they came through,” head track coach Jim Walton said. “Just about everybody did what we expected. That doesn’t always happen. I thought everybody did good across the board. This is a good group. A lot of these kids, the sophomores and even the juniors haven’t been able to experience coming to area and regionals because of COVID-19 last year, so it’s exciting for them to see what they’re able to do.”
