Coming off its inaugural soccer season at the high school level, Graham combined for a camp at Newton Field last week to area youths. The camp was hosted by Steers soccer coach Tim Wankowicz and Lady Blues coach Misty Mills.

The camp, which took place in the evening hours to avoid the triple digit temperatures, saw area youngsters took part who were incoming fifth through eighth graders. Graham hosted its first-ever soccer camp with campers ranging from second through fourth grade in early June. The campers included area youngsters such as Maxwell Coyac, Tadeo Vizcaino, Michael Stewart, Ozzy Trejo, Easton Hedge and Kadie Centers.

During this week, camp players learned how to improve their attacking and defense. Over the days of the camp each athlete received proper coaching that included drills and scrimmages that varsity soccer players assisted which encouraged improvement in one’s game. Each day the campers worked on dribbling, control, passing ,shooting and turning.

Both Wankowicz and Mills stressed having the basic fundamentals down by the time they arrive in high school will only help going forward.

“If they don’t have the certain fundamentals when they get to the high school level, then they will be lost and their game won’t be the same as the players on opposing team,” Wankowicz said.
