Graham Steers stomp Hawks in district 3-4A opener

The young Graham Steers are growing up in a big way.

The team put together perhaps their best games of the season so far in Friday night’s District 3-4A Division II opener.

In the first half, the Steers scored on its first two possessions to dictate the pace, leading to a blowout of the Iowa Park Hawks 42-14 at Newton Field.

Quarterback Hunter Lanham and the offense drove the Steers’ 8-play, 66-yard game-opening march. Star running back Chase Gilmore went right up the middle for a 2-yard touchdown to cap it, putting Graham in front, 7-0, two minutes and 48 seconds into the contest.

It didn’t take the Steers long to make another momentum-building play. Senior defensive lineman Will Hays applied pressure to Iowa Park quarterback Trent Green, which led to an incomplete pass on third down forcing a Hawks punt.

Sophomore running back/wideout Daniel Gilbertson took the handoff from Lanham and raced around the right side for a 17-yard score and the rout was on from there.
