The Graham Steers and Lady Blues varsity cross country teams opened their season this week at the Nocona CC Relays.
The boys relay was a six-mile race while the girls ran four miles. The course was a mile loop full of hills around the Indian Oaks Golf Course, and runners in each duo switched off every mile.
Each boy ran three miles total and each girl ran two, but having to switch off every mile provided some difficulties. The runners’ muscles began to cool off just in time for them to pick things up and start their next mile.
Steers and Lady Blues competed against a variety of schools such as Springtown, Pilot Point, Collinsville, Bowie, Petrolia, Callisburg, Midway, Saint Jo, Nocona and Chico.
Nolan Wankowicz and Hudson Weatherman led the way with a top 10 finish on the boys side during the six-mile run.
Behind them were the teams of Daniel Rincon and Dayne Dunnam along with Alexis Rincon and Liam Bailey who both finished inside the top 30.
On the girls side, the teams of Angela Fuentes and Taylan Locker along with Ellie Weatherman and Jazlyn Kimbro finished inside the top 25.
The Lady Blues were also rounded out by the teams of Maddison Bishop and Anzley Howard along with Finley Nevarez and Zoe Stovall who had strong performances of their own.
The teams’ next event will take place Wednesday, Aug. 27 at the Brownwood Invitational.
