The Graham Lady Blues are now ranked No. 15 in the state in 4A thanks to impressive wins earlier this season over Krum (No. 1) and Denver City (No. 11) and a steady stream of solid victories since. The Blues continue to impress as they head toward district play, but they aren't the only Graham volleyball team making a name for themselves. The JV Blues have put together an impressive season themselves, with their biggest accomplishment thus far being a first place trophy at the Windthorst tournament on Saturday, Aug. 27. The JV Blues took down Archer City in their first game of the tournament, winning 25-13; 25-14 before knocking off Holliday 26-24; 25-17. The young Blues then beat Windthorst in the championship game 25-21; 28-26. "It was awesome," JV coach Sarah Curd said. "We psyched ourselves up for that game last game against Windthorst, because we knew they would be good. That was good for us to show that we could compete." Curd pointed out that her team raised their level of play during the tournament, but the truth is the JV Blues have been pretty good all season. Their only JV loss to date came at the hands of Springtown on Aug. 9. A handful of losses to varsity teams at the Lu Allen Tournament may have scarred their record a bit, but against teams at their own level, the young Blues are rolling. "It's exciting to know that we have depth," Blues varsity head coach Marci Faulk said. "Thats' the first time that the JV has won a tournament since I've been here so that's promising for our future." Curd pointed out some players that excelled in the Windthorst Tournament. "Britain Thayer had some amazing blocks," she said. "Emily Schaefer and Celeste Aguirre had some great hits. Jillian Wendel plays a great middle. She has a really sly middle hit, which is fun. Of course, our back row of Kaylee Clay and Jourdan Daily are working hard on their hits and they're aggressive on back row digs. Avery Iles is an awesome setter and that's just naming a few." Curd also said that she expects this group of girls to win a lot of games when they move up to the varsity level, but for now the young Blues hope to continue their run of success this weekend at the Bridgeport Tournament.
