It was a rough evening for the junior varsity Lady Blues softball team. The team fell 12-1 to the Stephenville Honeybees.

There were several areas of flawed play throughout the game which contributed to the blowout loss. One of the most apparent from the start was pitching. From the start of the game things seemed a bit off for that unit.

A double and a wild pitch would score a Honeybees runner from third which opened things 1-0 in favor of Stephenville. It did not get much better for the Lady Blues as they would end up being “mercy ruled” that inning after giving up four unanswered runs.

That was one of two times that happened during the game as overall the team struggled in the contest.

A combination of inconsistent pitching and fielding errors lead to multiple stolen base and extra base running opportunities for Stephenville.

This shortened the field for the Lady Blues opponent and led to multiple scoring opportunities which opened things up in their 12-1 defeat.

The Lady Blues had a few sparks of life offensively throughout the contest. Kerstin Schupbach started things off hot for the Lady Blues in the bottom of the first with a triple.

Gabriella Reyes also hit a triple in the final inning of the game which led to the teams only run, but outside of that the Lady Blues bats were essentially cold for the rest of the contest.

“When we did make contact with the ball it went right to them (the Honeybees),” Coach Kelsey Williams said. “That’s just how the game goes sometimes.”

Despite Tuesday’s defeat, Williams and the Lady Blues are not hanging their heads low and continue to preach a message of getting better everyday.

“Go back the next day and start working again,” Williams said when asked how the team will improve. “They enjoy coming out and working.”

Williams also emphasized that her key areas of improvement for the team are contact hitting and baserunning. Williams also praised the work ethic of her team even when they have struggles.

“These girls work hard, they play hard, they do what's asked of them,” Williams said.

The JV Lady Blues had their first game Thursday, March, 20, of the City View Tournament and are back at it for regular season action Friday, March 21.

After a weekend tournament, the team will travel Tuesday, March 25 to play Brock.
