JV Lady Blues lose at Glen Rose

Mon, 10/03/2022 - 11:57 am

The junior varsity Lady Blues in a 25-20, 25-20 loss at Glen Rose Friday evening gave fans a reason for excitement for the future of the program. Despite the straight-set loss, the JV team proved to have heart and fought back from large deficits in both sets.

The JV Tigers jumped ahead early in the opening set, taking a 10-3 lead. Serve receive was a problem for the Lady Blues in both sets and caused the team to give up five points before a timeout.

Following the timeout, the Lady Blues fought back and closed the deficit to one point while trailing 10-11. Three different Lady Blues scored points while forcing four errors from the Lady Tigers.

Through the remainder of the set, the Lady Blues kept within five or fewer points through the middle and late portions of the first set. A tip by Rylee Ranger cut the deficit to two at 15-17, the smallest deficit following the first Lady Blues timeout.

The Lady Blues trailed by five points at 19-23 and called their second timeout of the set to try and regroup. Rylee Moore scored the final point for the Lady Blues in the first set at 20-24 before the team gave up its final point.

In the closing set, the Lady Blues fought back from double-digit deficits on two occasions to lose by five points for a second time. The Lady Tigers jumped to an 8-1 lead before the Lady Blues called their first timeout of the second set.

A Lady Blues tip that rolled off the net and out of bounds created the first 10-point deficit at 1-11. The Tigers later scored eight-straight points on aces to take a 14-point lead, but the Lady Blues fought back again.

Following a block kill by Macee Wilde and an error by the Lady Tigers, Lexi Wolfe scored on three straight aces. On Wolfe’s fourth serve, the Lady Tigers swung into the net and followed with a call for four hits. The Lady Blues trailed 18-23 following the run. Rylee Ranger scored the final point of the match for the Lady Tigers.

“In that series of missing those serves, I thought we were going to have to dig deep (and) keep fighting,” JV coach Sarah Curd said. “Despite that downward take, we fought back. And we need to realize that we’re just as strong as they are and even more so; because the tables turned and our serves fell. We went on a run, they’re making mistakes.”

After an open date yesterday, the JV Lady Blues’ schedule continues to pose a challenge when the team hosts Stephenville Friday at Graham High School. The JV match will take place in the main gym approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of the 5 p.m. varsity match.

The freshman team lost in three sets to the Lady Tigers 25-14, 19-25, 25-15. In the varsity match, the Lady Blues were defeated 25-17, 25-12, 25-22. The full match story from the varsity team will be inside the Wednesday, Oct. 5 edition of The Graham Leader.
