The JV Lady Blues got things off to a great start Tuesday as the team beat the Brownwood Lady Lions in three sets.
The match took place Tuesday, Sept. 23, and got the hometown crowd in a good mood, being that the senior night ceremony for the varsity team took place later in the night.
Set one saw the team take a stand early, winning it with a commanding final score of 25-16. The team started off hot leading 6-2 and never really looked back.
There was some stellar defense from Madi LeFevre and Hudson Wright who teamed up for a block to make it 7-2 and Paizlee Evans followed things up shortly after with a tipped ball to make it 10-7.
Despite some fight from Brownwood in the set, McKynley Corley had a pair of well-timed blocks at the top of the net to make it 13-9 Graham.
Braylee Wenninger along with Wright continued to put pressure on the Lady Lions with a bevy of kills in route to their eventual set one victory.
Set two saw the Lady Blues run into a bit of trouble, however. The team fought back and forth throughout the set, but eventually jumped out to a 21-16 lead looking to end things.
That was the last point the team scored in the set as Graham fell to Brownwood 25-22, sending it to a win or take all set three.
Thankfully for Graham, the team bounced back in a big way. After trailing 6-2 to start the frame, the team battled back and Wenninger tied the game with a point to make it 13 all.
Evans picked things up from there, claiming multiple points to help the team jump out to a 16-13 lead. When the Lady Lions tied things again, Evans responded by commanding the service line, while also tallying an ace, to help make it 20-17 Graham.
This time the team was able to pull things out winning 25-21 in set three.
Coach Courtney Wright expressed pride in the team after the win.
“We didn’t panic,” Wright said. “We’ve been through some tournaments so they’ve kind of held their composure. We make a mistake, then we come back and get the ball back. I think at this point in the season they’ve grown quite a bit.”
