The Lady Blues Junior Varsity Red team opened their 2022 season in winning fashion Tuesday, Nov. 8 at Haskell High School. After giving up their first-half lead late in the second quarter, the Lady Blues’ defense led the way in the second. Taking advantage of defensive takeaways, the Lady Blues JV Red defeated Haskell JV 31-22.

The game as a whole looked like a typical first game of the season for the Lady Blues. Rosters are not finalized as the team has not had a full week of practices to prepare for the season. Participating for the JV Red team Tuesday night was Kimber Pratt, Mayer Ryans, Diana Simental, Evie May, Camden Thorne, Rylee Moore, Tara Dawson, Rebekah Gilbertson, Macee Wilde and Briley Randall.

Playing point guard, Ryans earned an assist on the Lady Blues’ first basket of the season. It was a steal that led to a fast-break basket for the team’s first points. Ryans found May following her steal and May opened the scoring at the 5:56 mark of the first quarter. As both teams struggled to find the basket in the first quarter, May’s score was the only basket for the next two minutes and 23 seconds. Haskell finally responded with a 3-pointer at the 2:35 mark in the quarter.

Two of the three scores from the Lady Blues were a direct result of turnovers in the first quarter. Following another steal by Ryans, Thorne earned an assist on May’s second basket of the game for a 4-3 lead with 45 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Dawson beat the buzzer with a shot to end the first quarter with a 6-3 lead for the Lady Blues.
