The Graham Steers junior varsity baseball team had another rough day at home versus Mineral Wells.
The team suffered a 9-2 loss Tuesday, April 8 against the Rams. Head coach Bubba Brewster said changes need to be made.
“We looked kind of flat, we looked lethargic,” Brewster said. “I’ll take full responsibility of that.”
In order to make those kinds of changes, Brewster suggested that the lineups going forward may look very different.
Brewster said he believes his messaging to the team isn’t getting across verbally, so he’s hoping that a shakeup with the starters might be the shock to the system the team and all it’s respective players need to get back on track.
Right from the jump the team was in a hole. In the top of the second inning the team gave up a leadoff triple and an RBI single to go down 1-0. Later in the inning, quality running on the base paths from Mineral Wells led to another run scored and a 2-0 deficit.
The Steers countered in the bottom of the second inning with a run when Bryce Martin sent a ball into right field. However, the team failed to score again in the inning despite having runners on base from multiple walks.
Mineral Wells started to pile on runs the next inning when they scored two more making it 4-1 and another two in the fourth inning making it a 6-1 game.
Jaden Neal put Graham’s only other run of the game on the board when he ripped an RBI double into center field, scoring Martin.
Mineral Wells tacked on three more runs in the fifth and seventh to reach the 9-2 final score. Things could be looking very different for the team going forward this season.
“Next time we come out you might see some new faces,” Brewster said. “We’ve got to find some guys that are willing to get after it a little bit more than what we saw today.”
After traveling to Mineral Wells for their away matchup, the team will pick things up Thursday, April 17 against Stephenville at 4:30 p.m.
