As Graham and Newcastle head into the heart of their seasons in district play, it is important for them to go into that schedule with momentum.

The Graham Leader is recognizing Kenzie King of the Ladycats and Brodie Martin of the Steers as this week's Athletes of the Week.

Kenzie King, Ladycats Basketball

It was a thrilling night Tuesday, Jan. 13 for the Ladycats in their district matchup against the Perrin-Whitt Lady Pirates.

After a back and forth battle all night long, the Ladycats were able to come away with a victory 37-36 to stay undefeated in district with a 2-0 record.

Several key players stepped up, especially in the second half, to help the Ladycats stay locked in after a difficult second quarter against the Lady Pirates. One of those players was King.

King tied for the second most points on the night for the Ladycats with 12 points. In particular though, King was effective from beyond the arc.

She hit a three pointer in the second quarter to help the Ladycats maintain the lead and an even bigger three pointer from the right side of the court to retake the lead in the closing seconds of the third quarter 26-25.

“She was one of those freshman guards that we won the state championship with,” Ladycats head coach Ryan Dollar said. “Watching her grow from a defensive specialist her freshman year to putting some points on the board this year—she was hurt early, she didn’t play until after Thanksgiving so just getting her back and getting her back in shape has been amazing.”

King helped the Ladycats stay on the right track in district play with her performance.

Brodie Martin, Steers Basketball

The Steers made sure to enter their season with momentum on their side after picking up a big win 82-34 over the Abilene Hawks.

Several players had high scoring performances in the contest but one of those players was Martin.

Martin was a big part of the scoring effort, especially in the second quarter. He erupted for nine points to help the Steers jump out to a 43-18 lead at halftime.

All in all Martin finished the game  scoring a total of 14 points in the victory.

From here, the Steers will continue onward into their district schedule.
