Lady Blues advance after wild Alvarado series
WEATHERFORD— The Graham High School softball team advanced to the third round of the UIL playoffs following a walk-off RBI single by senior Alysia Alcantar Saturday.
The Lady Blues’ extra-inning victory seemed a fitting end to a series that began with Graham getting run-ruled 16-6, but rallying to take the second game 13-5 and ending the third in extra innings with a 5-4 victory.
Alcantar gets redemption
with walk-off RBI
Alcantar stepped to the plate determined to redeem herself for two fielding errors in the seventh inning, which allowed Alvarado to score the go-ahead run to take a 4-3.
“I thought, ‘We have two outs; it’s my senior year; it’s all or nothing,’” Alcantar said. “I just went up to have one good, last run and it came out in our favor ... I knew I had to make it up to not just myself but my team. We came so far and I would not be the reason we went down.”
Alcantar connected, charging for first just as junior catcher Nicole King sprinted for home and narrowly avoided a tag at the plate to score the game-winning run.
The score culminated a rally that began after sophomore second baseman Sarah Bundrick broke Alvarado standout sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Woodlee’s shutout in the sixth by driving in junior outfielder Aubree Beggs. King deadlocked the game 2-2 after driving in Bundrick on a liner to centerfield, then freshman shortstop Alex Husen plated King on a misplayed in-field fly ball.
