Although the results might not show it, the Graham Lady Blues have shown growth while dealing with adversity and growing pains during the 2022-2023 season.

Lady Blues coach Kyle Wood has been focusing on the team’s defense efforts and it was on display at times during the Lady Blues’ 35-15 loss Tuesday, Jan. 3 at Seymour.

While the team still struggled to find scoring on the offensive end, the Lady Blues kept themselves in the game for most of the evening against the 2A No. 15 Lady Panthers. The first quarter was not an example of the improved defense that Wood was hoping to see.

Sadie Salizar scored the game’s opening basket, with an assist from Becca McGregor, 25 seconds into the game. The Lady Panthers scored the next 12 points to take a double-digit lead with a steal and a basket by Addison Castilleja with 65 seconds remaining in the quarter.

Emi Gordy stopped the Lady Panthers’ scoring run, with an assist from Macee Wilde, with eight seconds remaining in the first quarter. When the buzzer sounded, the Lady Blues trailed 12-4.
