A couple days before Thanksgiving, the Lady Blues basketball team spent time in Bowie at a tournament where the team gained valuable experience in the midst of a series of difficult games.
Over the course of two days Monday, Nov. 25 and Tuesday, Nov. 26, the Lady Blues went to battle in four games against Holliday, Paradise, Burkburnett and Muenster. Although the team went 0-4 in those contests, there was lots to learn and room to grow following each match-up.
Listed below is the final score for each game, along with a short summary and point totals for Graham’s girls in every contest.
Lady Blues v. Holliday, (L) 45-34
The tournament started out on a difficult note for the Lady Blues in their match-up with the Lady Eagles. Consistent offense was a struggle while Holliday came out hot at both the start of the game and out of the halftime break.
Holliday led 22-16 at halftime, and the teams nearly matched each other in the third quarter, with the Lady Eagles outscoring the Lady Blues 15-13 to head into the fourth with a 37-29 lead. But Graham couldn’t find the offense to pull out the comeback.
Briley Randall led the Lady Blues in scoring with 10 points followed by Mayci Ryans and Hallie Gough with 6 points each and Addyson Weaver with 5 points.
Lady Blues v. Paradise, (L) 61-20
The rematch with the Lady Panthers looked almost identical to when the two teams first faced each other a couple weeks ago.
Paradise’s defense made scoring a real battle for Graham, while the Lady Panthers’ offense showcased an elite ability to put the ball in the basket. The Lady Blues trailed 34-10 at halftime but managed to find a bit more scoring late in the game in the fourth quarter.
Nearly every Lady Blue on the team recorded points one way or another, showing a balanced offensive effort despite the struggles.
Gough was the leading scorer with 4 points.
Lady Blues v. Burkburnett, (L) 45-26
Graham matched up with Burkburnett in a game where the Lady Bulldogs took control early and didn’t let up.
With Graham’s team, under a new head coach, the offense is taking time to fully mesh. Players are working through their plays and trying to get the right looks at the basket. Often, the Lady Blues looked to be playing a bit too fast which led to multiple turnovers.
Burkburnett led 27-12 at halftime, and while Graham scored 12 points in the third quarter, the Lady Bulldogs did as well. The Lady Blues cooled off in the fourth as Burkburnett went on to win it.
Rebecca McGregor led Graham with 6 points followed by Katie McGehee with 5 points. Gough, Weaver and Randall each had 4 points and Ryans pitched in 3 points.
Lady Blues v. Muenster, (L) 43-36
In the final game of Graham’s tournament run and against what may have been one of the toughest opponents in the field, the Lady Blues put up a fight in their closest outcome over the two days.
Graham had lost to Paradise by a large margin while Muenster defeated Paradise by just two points. The fact that the Lady Blues took the Lady Hornets to the limit and lost by a slim margin was big for Graham’s varsity girls.
Bryer finished the game as the team leader with 8 points with McGregor next with 7 points. McGehee, Randall and Weaver each had 5 points while Ryans ended with 3 points.
Following the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the Lady Blues will return to action Tuesday, Dec. 3 on the road at Eastland.
