Things looked bleak in the beginning of the Lady Blues district matchup against the Lady Tigers, but the team never lost its drive. Despite their late-game scoring boost, Glen Rose was always just out of reach.
Things were rough out of the gate for the Lady Blues, with the only points on the board in the first quarter on three 2-point shots, two from Fayth Bryer and one from Addyson Weaver. The Graham team was down 18 points with the game at 6-24 moving into the second quarter.
The circumstances did not improve for the Lady Blues into the second quarter with the only six points being scored, three of which were on free throws from Rebecca McGregor and Briley Randall.
The end of the second quarter was the mark of a change in the team. With less than five seconds left on the clock, Katy McGeehee scored a big 3-points shot to push the score to 12-38 into the second half.
Both offensively and defensively the team dominated the third quarter, scoring 16 points while holding the Lady Tigers to only seven points.
The team was led by Bryer who had two 3-point shots and one 2-point shot. Both McGregor and Weaver brought their own scoring to the board with both picking up two 2-point shots and pushing the score much closer at 28-45.
At the conclusion of the third quarter, there was enthusiasm among the team that could be heard and seen on the court. While the crowd continued to cheer on the team as they tightened the scoring gap, Glen Rose answered in their own way with four 3-point shots.
Randall, McGeehee and Weaver, with the help of their fellow team members, continued to put points on the board, but it was not enough to stop the Lady Tigers who were out of reach. The game ended in a 35-57 loss for the team.
Leading in scoring for the team was Bryer with 12 points, followed by Weaver with eight points, McGeehee with seven points, McGregor with six points and Randall with two points.
Lady Blues head coach Baylee Thompson said the biggest strength for the team is defense. She said as the team grows in confidence with their athletic abilities, they will bring aggressiveness.
β(The team is) growing more confident in themselves so they will be more aggressive on defense,β she said. βThe last two games they are starting to learn how to bait passes which have been turning into steals. I would like to see more of that through the second half of district.β
After a trip Friday, Jan. 24 to Stephenville, the team will return home for a rematch Tuesday, Jan. 28 against Brock. The Lady Blues faced Brock earlier this month and struggled against a tough offensive and defensive front, falling 80-27.
Following their game against Brock, the team will have two other rematches left in their district schedule which will be Friday, Jan. 31 against Brownwood and Tuesday, Feb. 4 against Mineral Wells.
