Lady Blues JV Blue goes 1-2 in Bowie

The Lady Blues’ JV Blue basketball team traveled to Bowie Monday and Tuesday this week for the annual Hoopin’ Into The Holidays tournament. The team finished the tournament with a 1-2 record after games against Henrietta, Burkburnett and Bowie JV White.

The Lady Blues opened the tournament with a 23-18 loss. The team bounced back against Burkburnett with a 32-13 win. Against Bowie White, in their tournament finale, the Lady Blues were defeated 30-22.

Henrietta 23, Lady Blues 18

The Lady Blues came out strong in the second half, but could not hold off the Lady Cats in the fourth quarter in the loss. Making baskets was a struggle for the Lady Blues, who was held to four points and outscored 7-4 in the first half. Diana Simental made a 2-point field goal in the first and second quarters for the Lady Blues. Addison Agraz missed on two free throw opportunities in the first quarter. 

Opening the third quarter while trailing, the Lady Blues picked up their scoring in the third quarter. Simental scored six of her team’s eight points with two 2-point field goals and a successful 2-for-2 trip to the free-throw line. Larissa Warren added two points. After trailing at the start of the quarter, the Lady Blues led 12-11 going into the fourth quarter.

While the Lady Blues kept close to their scoring pace in the fourth quarter, the Lady Cats took advantage of a pair of 3-pointers to close out the win. Warren, Simental and Rebekah Gilberton each had two points for the Lady Blues.

Simental finished the game with a game-high 12 points. 

Lady Blues 32, Burkburnett 13

The Lady Blues overcame a second slow start in the tournament to earn their lone win of the week. Simental and Agraz represented the two made 2-point field goals in the first quarter for the Lady Blues, who trailed 5-4.

After scoring four points to open the game, the Lady Blues scored a combined 29 points over the next three to earn the 19-point win. 

Savannah Fricks, Emma Jobe and Simental each made 2-point field goals for the Lady Blues. Agraz added a free throw during the Lady Blue’s seven-point second-quarter effort. Defensively, the Lady Blues held the Lady Bulldogs to a combined two field goals in the second and third quarters. Five different Lady Blues found the scoreboard in the third quarter for a 12-2 advantage for the quarter. Gilbertson led the Lady Blues with four points. Simental, Jobe, Agraz and Fricks each had two points. With the Lady Blues holding an 11-point advantage going into the fourth quarter, they did not let up in the fourth. Gilbertson, Simental, Agraz and Fricks each made 2-point field goals. Simental added a free throw.

Simental led all scorers with nine points. Agraz added seven points. Gilbertson and Fricks each had six points. Jobe finished the game with four points. 

Bowie White 33, Lady Blues 22

Neither the Lady Blues nor the Lady Rabbits could find consistent shooting success in the opening quarter. Gilbertson represented the Lady Blues’ lone basket in the quarter as her team trailed 3-2. 

While the Lady Blues improved in the second quarter, the Lady Rabbits did the same. Agraz scored four points and Fricks had a 2-point field goal for the Lady Blues, who were outscored 13-6 in the quarter to trail 15-8 at halftime.

The Lady Blues were able to cut into their seven-point deficit in the third quarter with an 8-3 advantage. Agraz earned four points on a 3-pointer and a free throw. Warren and Simental each had two points. 

Any hope for a comeback by the Lady Blues were dashed in the fourth quarter by the Lady Rabbits, who doubled the Lady Blues’ six-point fourth-quarter scoring. Agraz, Warren and Simental each had two points.

Agraz led the Lady Blues’ tournament finale with 10 points.

All three Lady Blues’ teams will travel to Stamford Tuesday, Nov. 29. Sub-varsity tips off at 5 p.m. Varsity will follow Following Tuesday’s games, both JV Blue and Red will participate in the Haskell tournament next weekend.
