It was an exciting day for the Lady Blues junior varsity team as they picked up their first win of the season against the Boyd Lady Jackets.

The match took place Tuesday, Aug. 26, as the team traveled on the road to take on their opponent.

Things did not start off in the right direction for the junior varsity team though, as they came out in set one and lost the opening frame 25-13.

However, coach Courtney Wright praised the team for their ability to stay focused and turn things around during the rest of the match.

“I was proud of them,” Wright said. “Coach Faulk talked to them, I talked to them, and they changed there. They passed the ball better, they served better and we had a little bit more chemistry on the court than we did set one, so we made a difference.”

In set two, Madi LeFevre started things off with a point to put Graham in the lead. After a bit of a back and forth, Braylee Wenninger gave the Lady Blues the lead again with a kill on the left side of the net.

Wenninger also cleared a ball for a point in the early goings of the set to give Graham the lead again 6-5. Collins Weil and Landree Smith put in work in the front row picking up a block to make it 9-6 and then Smith followed this with a point on a tipped ball to make it 10-7 Lady Blues.

Later on in the bout, Boyd started to fight back but Weil picked up a block to tie it 21 all and Hudson Wright picked up an ace at the service line to make it 22-21 Graham.

Ultimately, the team pulled away with the set victory 25-23 to even the score 1-1.

In set three, Kylie Pruitt put the Lady Blues right out in front with a pair of points at the service line to make it 2-0 Lady Blues.

The teams fought closely back and forth once again with the score tied 6-6 early. That’s when Paizlee Evans stepped up to the service line and took command to give Graham a 9-6 lead after picking up multiple points.

Evans' services would come in handy later in the set as she gave Graham a 19-16 lead when the Lady Jackets were fighting back.

With the score tied later in the set at 24 all, the Lady Blues were going to need to step up to pull out the match victory. That’s exactly what Wright and Wenninger did as the former picked up a kill to set up the win and the latter picked up the match winning point on a tip.

Their next game will take place Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Woodson at 5:30 p.m.
