The Graham Lady Blues basketball team opened the season on a high note with a victory over the Haskell Lady Indians.

This was a big character building win as the team kicked off into the regular season.

“We put 61 points on the board and that's huge for us,” head coach Baylee Thompson said. “We’re 1-0, that’s an exciting thing. It’s a good way to start the season, we just have to keep that energy going and get ready for our next game.”

Mayci Ryans started things off by finding Addyson Weaver for a layup to tie the score 2-2 in the first quarter. It was a very tight contest from there as Graham trailed 9-8 after one quarter.

Katy McGehee scored on a fastbreak layup and Briley Randall, Tara Dawson and Weaver all hit free throws at the charity stripe to help keep things a close contest.

McGehee came back in the second quarter with another layup to help the Lady Blues take the lead again 10-9. Ava Street then hit a layup and both Ryans and Street hit back to back threes to make it 18-11.

Eventually, the team went on a scoring barrage to make it a 30-24 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, the lady Indians went on a comeback run, but the Lady Blues countered with more points to keep it a double digit lead going into the fourth quarter, up 43-31.

Once again the Lady Indians went on a mini run in the fourth quarter to make it an eight point game 58-50, but the Lady Blues never faltered.

One of the key contributors down the stretch was Gabbie Reyes.

She had a nice turnaround layup underneath the basket and also fought for a second chance rebound later in the quarter and put up a shot for an-and-one layup to make it 61-50.

The Lady Blues went on to win the contest 61-51.

The Lady Blues’ next matchup after their Saturday, Nov. 15 game will be at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18 back at home against Windthorst.
