The Lady Blues kicked off their spring league schedule last week. The team split their two opening games against the Breckenridge Lady Bucks and Huckabay Lady Indians.

“I think they all played very hard,” Head coach Brian Nail said. “They were very aggressive. They stayed in the game (two) even though they were down. I'm very proud of them.”

The Lady Blues started their night strong with a win over the Lady Bucks. There were several standouts in the game, including Katie McGehee.

McGehee took advantage of several opportunities at the top of the key, forcing multiple turnovers and finishing on the other end with fast break layup.

McGehee also did a solid job organizing the offense, finding multiple outlets for players like Addyson Weaver to score underneath the basket.

Speaking of Weaver, she was a very physical presence underneath the basket in both games with strong finished to the rim and solid defense.

Weaver forced a jump ball at one point in the competition while also providing solid defense and grabbing multiple boards.

After a tight matchup the Lady Blues picked up the win 27-23 over Breckenridge in game one.

After their 6:30 contest, their sights were set on game two against the Huckabay Lady Indians.

Things started rough for the Lady Blues as they were outhustled by the Lady Indians.

Instead of setting the pace like they did against Breckenridge, the team was repeatedly getting beat in transition to the tune of trailing 15-4 at the end of the first half.

However in the second half they started to show fight. Their first real igniting moment came on a three from Briley Randall off the assist from Bentleigh Martin.

McGehee also started to find her rhythm again hitting back to back tough layups to make it 19-11 with 10 minutes left to play.

The duo of McGehee and Weaver also started to find their chemistry again, trading buckets back and forth but ultimately the early deficit was too much to overcome.

Graham lost 32-17 in the second game. Despite the loss, Nail had some encouraging words for the team.

“It (the spring league) gets the girls moral up,” Nail said. “The teamwork is there, the girls get to know each other more and we have some new players coming up. It's a great thing for everyone.”

After opening the spring league, the Lady Blues traveled back to Mineral Wells High School for week two of the tournament Tuesday, May 6.
