The Graham Lady Blues have shown all season long that they can win games in different ways. Their offense has demonstrated an ability to explode for wins of 10-plus runs, but they’ve also won a fair share of low-scoring games, as well.

When the team traveled Thursday, March 28 to Glen Rose for another district matchup, the Lady Blues came home with a low-scoring 2-0 win in a game dominated by pitching on both sides.

Senior Reese Calhoun led the way for the Lady Blues in the pitching circle as she threw a complete game shutout, only allowed two hits, walked three batters and struck out 15 Lady Tigers. She was in control the entire game and didn’t allow a single opposing player to reach second base.

On the other side, Graham’s hitters had a bit more success as they tallied seven hits as a team, but their runs didn’t come until the final inning. It looked like the two teams might be headed for extra innings as the first two hitters grounded out and struck out before Calhoun reached base on a single to left field and advanced to second on the throw.

Graham’s catcher, Meagan Brooks, came up next with an opportunity to drive in at least a run and give her team the lead. The senior catcher blasted a long home run to left field to put her team up 2-0, which the score would remain as Calhoun closed out Glen Rose in their final at bats.

Throughout the game, the Lady Blues only had one other potential chance to score some runs in the third inning when they loaded the bases with two outs. Olga Morales and Calhoun hit back-to-back singles and Brooks walked to set the table for Emily Lawson. The third baseman hit the ball hard but grounded out to shortstop to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.

While Calhoun dominated in the circle, Graham’s defense behind her was solid. The Lady Blues didn’t commit a single error in the game and ensured that the game remained close even if the bats couldn’t get going until later. But by the time the final out was recorded, the Lady Blues had earned the hard-fought victory.

Brooks finished the game 2-for-2 with two RBIs, two walks and a run scored. Calhoun and Morales both went 2-for-4 and Zoey Harrell had the team’s other hit and ended 1-for-3.

The win helped the Lady Blues move to 2-1 in district while they sit at 17-7 on the season. After a home game Tuesday, April 2 against Mineral Wells, Graham will have a weekend to rest before taking on Stephenville at home Tuesday, April 9 at 6:30 p.m.
