Lady Blues sweep Vernon
The Lady Blues do not have anything more to lose or gain in the district schedule. Last week the team secured a second-place finish in District 5-4A. Friday’s 3-0 win at Vernon and Monday’s senior night match against Mineral Wells were formalities and opportunities for the young team to get more experience.
Typically a Lady Blues road match at Vernon comes with challenges. Coach Marci Faulk has said multiple times that she does not like playing in the gym. Friday was a bit of fresh air for the coach as the team started strong and cruised to wins of 25-14, 25-16, 25-22.
“I was so relieved when we started off strong,” Faulk said. “I didn’t want to make a big deal out of it to the girls because most of them haven’t played here before, but there is just something about this gym and when we come here, it’s a struggle.”
The Lady Blues led for a majority of the set. Vernon took early leads at 1-0 and 2-1 before back-to-back errors gave the Lady Blues a 3-2 lead. A Lady Blues block sailed out of bounds to tie the game again. Back-to-back kills by Olga Morales sparked a 5-0 run for the Lady Blues. The run gave the team an 8-3 lead. The Lady Blues did not trail again until the third set.
