You never know what to expect on the first game, tournament or meet of the season. The difference between practice and true competition is too vast. If the first meet is any indication, the Lady Blues cross country team could be an exciting bunch to watch. The Blues took home the first place trophy in Division II at the Perkins Invitational in Burkburnett Thursday, led by Debi Hunter and Kendra Williams who finished four seconds apart in seventh and eighth place. Just 11 seconds behind the first two Graham finishers was another group of Blues. Priscilla Herrera finished in 11th place, while Khloe Morris came in 13th, and Maria Hernandez in 15th. Lexi Fuentes’ came in 19th place, while Alicia Olvera’s 23rd place finish rounded out the Blues finishers in a 63-runner field. Possibly the most impressive aspect of the Blues victory is their ability to stay close to one another. According to coach Ky Graham, that is something that actually has carried over from practice to the meets. “If we can maintain everybody progressing together, we could have a really good team by the time district rolls around,” Graham said. “I felt like the girls would come in close together because that’s the way they run in practice. They’re a great group of coachable girls.” For the rest of this story, pick up a copy of Saturday's Graham Leader, or subscribe to our online edition.
