After a weekend tournament in Lubbock, the Lady Blues returned home for their first game of the season against the Alvord Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Blues made sure to make an early statement against the Lady Bulldogs and came away with a 9-1 victory.
Head coach Adam Arrington said coming out of the tournament in Lubbock that he was looking for improvements in making routine plays defensively while seeing more confidence up at the plate—and the team accomplished exactly that against Alvord.
“It’s not going to be changed overnight,” Arrington said. “What was good is seeing our kids try to make those adjustments, trying to change and I thought they had a little bit of a better plan and I thought we put the ball in play and did some good things.”
Right off the bat, Tiffany Cotter found herself in a rhythm on the pitchers mound, quickly getting out of the first inning with no runs scored.
Cotter got through most of the contest completely in control outside of one inning where defensive errors led to a run being scored.
In the bottom of the first, the Lady Blues got off to the races putting the ball in play and driving in runs.
After a single from Ruby Shaffer into center field, Jansyn Louder bunted and a wild throw at first led to the runners advancing to second and third. Hudson Wright put the ball in play after her and drove in a run to give the Lady Blues a 1-0 lead.
Larissa Warren followed this up with a sac-fly to score Louder and make it a 2-0 game. After Cotter drew a walk, Kylie Pruitt put the ball in play leading to another wild throw which scored another run.
In the bottom of the second, Alexis Aguirre ripped a leadoff triple into right field and Shaffer followed that up with a single to score the run 4-0.
Louder followed this up with a triple and Wright drove in another RBI with a hit 5-0.
The Lady Blues scored four more runs in the game and maintained things on defense to get their first win of the season.
After this game, the Lady Blues get a long week of practice and pick things up Monday, Feb. 23 back at home against Peaster.
