The Newcastle Ladycats capped off their district schedule with another victory over Woodson to bring their streak to 15 wins as all eyes look to the bi-district game next week.
The Ladycats have been dominating all aspects of the court recently and that continued with their 67-42 win Tuesday, Feb. 4 over the Woodson Cowgirls. Head coach Ryan Dollar said the team’s streak is due to their commitment to the game.
“These girls work hard and are focused. We are constantly adding new sets/offensive looks and these girls put the time in to learn them,” Dollar said. “They also work together really well on the floor and do a really good job of getting the open girl the ball.”
Mattie Dollar and Camren Mallory were the standouts for the game bringing a scoring rush for the team in the first two quarters.
At the end of the first quarter the score was 28-6, with the Ladycats up. Dollar had a total of 17 points along with a 3-point shot from Emma Hawkins and 2-point shots from Evie May, Kenzie King and Mallory.
The Ladycats were able to score another 25 points in the second quarter while holding the Cowgirls to only three points. Mallory and Dollar hit 3-point, 2-point and free throw shots and had help from Emma Hawkins, Kenna Mahan and Kinsey Hawkins to bring the score to 53-9 at the half.
While things slowed into the second half of the game, the team still put points on the board with King, Mallory and Sarah Northington each hitting 2-point shots while Kinsey Hawkins brought two 3-point shots and Mahan contributed two made free throws.
The Cowgirls woke up in the last half of the game and scored 12 points in the third quarter and 21 points in the fourth quarter. Despite their last-ditch effort to reach Newcastle, the Ladycats came out on top.
Leading in scoring for the Ladycats was Dollar with 26 points, followed by Mallory with 13 points, Kinsey and Emma Hawkins with seven points, King with six points, Mahan with four points and May and Northington with two points each.
“I feel like this team has started to become one and has put ‘we’ over ‘me.’ They look for the open person on offense and are starting to figure out the defensive end of the floor a little better,” Dollar said.
The Ladycats will have their bi-district game at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10 against the Forestburg Lady Longhorns at Wichita Falls Legacy High School. The head coach said the team will be hard at work to prepare for the upcoming game.
“We are just taking one day and one game at a time,” Dollar said. “We will watch some film over our bi-district opponent and take (measures) to get some shots up and work on executing a game plan on Monday night.”
