The Newcastle Ladycats defeated the Strawn Lady Greyhounds in the opening round of the postseason to become bi-district champions.
This match was nothing short of a five set thriller. Despite the win, the team actually trailed in this matchup at points and head coach Ashley Archer was proud of the team for showing grit during times of adversity.
“I was very proud of the grit they showed in set four to come back and win 26-24,” Archer said. “Then they let that momentum carry them into the fifth set and never really let up after that.”
The Ladycats took the lead in set one after winning 25-19. The team then dropped sets two and three 25-18 and 25-15.
With their season on the line trailing the match 2-1, the Ladycats fought back to take set four 26-24 as Archer said.
The team then dominated the final set against the Lady Greyhounds by a score of 15-8 to take the match.
Sophie Terrell led the way with 20 kills offensively. Aubree Clayton followed behind Terrell with 12 kills.
Emma Hawkins, Kinzee Forbus and Greyson Nunez rounded out the kills leaderboard with eight kills, seven kills and five kills respectively.
Kinsey Hawkins, Emma Hawkins and Flor Carranza each led the team in digs with 15 for Kinsey Hawkins and 14 for Emma Hawkins and Carranza.
Greenleigh Moore also had 10 digs while Camren Mallory and Nunez each had five.
Emma Hawkins had three aces at the service line while Moore and Carranza had an ace each.
The team was also dominant in serve receive with Carranza having 16 successful receptions while Emma Hawkins had 11.
Moore, Nunez and Kinsey Hawkins rounded out the serve receptions category with eight for Moore and Nunez and six for Kinsey Hawkins.
The Ladycats were are set to take on the Harrold Lady Hornets at Chico High School in the area round Tuesday, Nov. 4.
