The Newcastle Ladycats had a big weekend in district play by overcoming the Bryson Cowgirls, the team picked up a clean sweep in three sets to help make an early mark in the district. 

The team won set one in dominant fashion picking up a victory 25-16. The team had to fight a little more over the Cowgirls in set two but ultimately picked up the victory 25-20 to take a 2-0 lead. 

One set away from victory, the team picked up another victory by the same score as set one 25-16.

Sophie Terrell led the team in kills offensively with 15 and Emma Hawkins wasn’t too far behind her with 12.

Kenzie King had eight kills, Kinzee Forbus had six and Aubree Clayton had five. 

Clayton also had two blocks on the night defensively. Hawkins held down the fort defensively with 10 digs and Flor Carranza had eight. 

Camren Mallory surpassed 700 assists this season with her 47 in the win over the Cowgirls. 

The team also had eight aces from the service line. Mallory and Emma Hawkins had half of them both picking up two each. Carranza picked up another two aces while Kinsey Hawkins and Terrell both had one. 

Head coach Ashley Archer also praised the team for their hitting ability on the night which she described as great. 

The team as a whole recorded a hitting percentage of 0.253% and held the Cowgirls to a hitting percentage of 0.068%.

After playing against Garner Tuesday, Oct. 7, the team picks things up at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, against the Perrin-Whitt Lady Pirates at home.

That will mark the half way point of the team’s district schedule and with wins in both matches it will help them put their stamp on the district.
