Ladycats represent in Whiteface tournament

The Newcastle Ladycats participated in a slate of tournament matchups this past weekend and put up a strong effort, finishing 1-3 after four games. 

The tournament was held from Thursday, Dec. 4 to Saturday, Dec. 6 and the Ladycats took on teams Olton, Shallowater, Wellman Union and Friona. 

Newcastle's first game against the Olton Lady Mustangs ended in a loss 44-29. This was followed up by another valiant effort but also another loss to the Shallowater Lady Mustangs 63-36. 

The Ladycats’ best game came in their third game against the Wellman Union Lady Cats. Newcastle pulled off a dominant victory 42-24. 

The Ladycats fought in the first quarter but trailed 12-8. Kenzie King hit a three pointer from beyond the arc. Camren Mallory hit a two pointer and a free throw and Emma Hawkins followed that up with her own midrange bucket. 

Newcastle continued to keep it close but still trailed 19-14 going into halftime. King hit a midrange jumper while Mallory hit a pair of free throws and a two point shot. 

The Ladycats defense stepped up big time in the third quarter limiting the Lady Cats to three points while Newcastle put up 13 offensively. 

Both King and Mallory had five points each in the quarter, with a three pointer and a two pointer scored by both. Hawkins hit a midrange jumpshot and a free throw. 

Newcastle scored another 15 points in the fourth quarter while limiting Wellman Union to two points. 

King knocked down a two point shot while Mallory had eight points in the quarter on a three pointer, two pointer and three free throws. 

Hawkins also hit a three pointer and a two pointer to round things out. 

Newcastle played one more game against the Friona Lady Chieftains which ended with a 45-26 score in favor of Friona. 

After a game Tuesday, Dec. 9 the Ladycats pick things up at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12 against Holliday.
